Feeling the first movements of your baby is a momentous occasion in pregnancy. These movements are often referred to as “quickening.” Most expectant mothers will start to feel their baby move between weeks 18
and 22 of pregnancy. However, it’s not uncommon for some to feel movements as early as week 14
, and as late as week 26.
For those who have been pregnant before, the first movements may be noticed a bit earlier, sometimes around month 4, because they’re more familiar with the sensation. First-time mothers might not feel these movements until closer to 25 weeks. The position of the placenta can also affect the timing of when these movements are felt. If the placenta is anterior, facing the front, it can muffle the movements and make them harder to detect.
The initial movements may feel like flutters, or like a little fish swimming around, and are a sign that the baby is becoming more active and strong. As the weeks go by, these movements will become more pronounced and frequent, leading up to the more defined kicks and jabs that are felt in the later stages of pregnancy. It’s a unique and personal experience for each mother and a delightful reminder of the new life developing within.
